Milford Track
Experience the world-famous Milford Track in a day unguided and at your own pace. Choose to walk the Milford Track at either end, Lake Te Anau or Milford Sound, and you can spend the day walking 'the finest walk in the world.'
Fiordland National Park offers a feast of hiking activities, with the Milford Track taking first place for its spectacular scenery and icon status. We have now made it possible to explore this famous track in just a day, without the need to stay in backcountry huts or carry a heavy pack. Explore on foot after a scenic drive to Milford or water taxi ride up Lake Te Anau and soak up the Fiordland magic on one of our 10km easy-going return day walks.
Both ends of the Milford Track are easy-going, flat and suitable for almost everyone making this a perfect day adventure for friends and family.
Need transport? Wherever you start your journey, we have a simple Milford Track transfer solution. Book your water taxi, bus, or even your Milford Sound flight or cruise with Fiordland Outdoors Co.
Day walk from Milford Sound
Just a 10-minute boat journey across Deepwater Basin in Milford Sound will have you at Sandfly Point and ready to explore a day walk on the Milford Track.
This section of the track offers a taste of one of the world’s most famous walks and is ideal for anyone on a day trip to Milford Sound or staying overnight at Milford Sound Lodge and looking to explore further. This section of the track is flat and easy-going, and in under two hours, you can reach Giant Gate Falls, one of the highlights of the Milford Track and one of the best waterfalls in Milford Sound. Allow 3 hours for the return hike. The perfect family-friendly adventure in Milford Sound.
Day Walk from Te Anau Downs
Enjoy a stunning 50 min boat journey from Te Anau Downs across Lake Te Anau before stepping ashore at Glade Wharf, ready to explore the Milford Track.
Once you've arrived at the Glade Wharf, the track weaves through thick native beech forest and alongside the gin-clear Clinton River. It won't be long until you see the famously photographed swing bridge. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for snippets of the Fiordland mountains peeking through and listen for the birds; you might spot a few along the way. Lunch at Clinton Hut, the first hut on the DOC multi-night walk then back to meet the boat at 4pm, arriving back at Te Anau Downs 5pm.
